The unique character of the Sierra de Gata is manifest in the civil and religious buildings, many of enormous historical value, which speak of the importance of these lands in the course of history. In Hoyos, you will find several examples of monumental buildings, where the Church of the Buen Varón stands out as reference to a noble past.

Amidst the architectural heritage of Hoyos, the parochial church of Nuestra Señora del Buen Varón is a fine example of the devotion to granite rock which has always been venerated. The initial construction of this temple was commenced in the 12th and 13th century in late Romanesque style, of which is still preserved the lower half of its main entrance, with its semi-pointed arch, embellished with archivolts.

During the following centuries the temple was enlarged and reformed or substituted, which allowed more space for another two entrances, these now in Gothic and Late Gothic, the same as the tower or bell-tower, of later construction, and the original pinnacles adorned with balls which surround the upper part of the church, like gargoyles in the shape of animals or tubular style.

In the interior we find an impressive Baroque altarpiece, which some attribute to José Benito Churriguera, and the image, from the period of the original temple, of the Virgin and child, one of the most ancient mariana sculptures of Extremadura.

However, this is not the only important religious monument to be found in the Sierra de Gata; there are many and varied, humble or more pretentious, but all of them hide treasures worthy of notice.
